Chopped Glass Roofing

This is where the roofing industry is heading!

The chopped glass and emulsion system is not new, it has been around since the 1960's and it has a long track record of superior re-roof performance. We would be happy to let you inspect some of our chopped glass and emulsion roofs that are more than 20 years old.

The combination of environmental issues and pressure from low-overhead low ball contractors is changing the roofing industry. The chopped glass and emulsion system can give your customer more and better re-roof options.

The chopped glass system uses the same process used by manufacturers to build fiberglass boats, tubs, motorhomes, etc. Fiberglass roving (fiberglass rope) is fed into an air-driven chopping motor that precisely chops the glass into millions of 1/2" strands. The Chop King chopping gun then blows those glass strands into a fan pattern using 4 air jets, where it is precisely blended, mid air, with 2 converging fan patterns of clay asphalt emulsion. Essentially, the Kold King rig is applying a built-up roof complete with asphalt and felt (glass fiber reinforcement), except that the finish product is much more versatile and durable that built-up roofing. It is extremely fast, too, at up to 400 SQRS in a day with 3 men when using a Kold King rig. This is an EXTREMELY important advantage to your customer (the building owner or manager) in that more of his roofing dollars stays on his roof.

Example Roof: $10,000

Installing this hypothetical $10,000 roof using old methods, e.g., tar & gravel (hot BUR), modified bitumen, etc., approximately $3,000 of the building owner's $10,000 goes toward material on the roof, while $7,000 of his $10,000 gets up and walks away when the roof is complete, because it was labor!

With the chopped glass/emulsion roof system, the contractor has invested in high tech automation that dramatically increases productivity and lowers labor costs. It is not uncommon, in fact, for a Kold Kinger contractor to install 10 times more sq. ft. in a day than typical roofing crews can install. Thus, approximately $8,000 of the building owner's $10,000 investment remains on his roof in the form of roofing materials, while only $2,000 was spent on labor.

Typical installation on a gravel surfaced built-up roof calls for poly fabric to be installed in a flood layer of emulsion asphalt. Conventional polyester can be used, or the ultra high strength polypropylene seem in this photo, which is 12'6" wide for increased production and fewer side-lap seams.

Final surface options include bright reflective aluminized emulsion asphalt which can also be applied with your Kold King rig, or white elastomeric coatings.

The chopped glass and emulsion system is very practical because the high tech process makes sense to your customers. Your customer can see that -- with your Kold King rig -- you have invested in a high tech system that allows you economies of scale/production that other roofers can't compete with. Mr. Customer can easily understand that, because your Kold King rig and 3 men can do the work that would otherwise require 30 men, more of his roofing dollar stays on his roof in terms of material...rather than walking off when the job is complete in terms of labor. A classic win/win!

Chopped Glass & Emulsion Has Been Around Since The 60's
It wasn't until Kold King wrapped it all up in a convenient turnkey package that the chopped glass & emulsion system really began to gain market share in a big way.

Become a Kold Kinger   Contractors who own Kold King rigs have become somewhat of a fraternity, calling themselves Kold Kingers. Kold Kingers are now in 30 states...by the time you see a Kold King rig on your competitor's job, the opportunity may be gone.
